„Was machst du eigentlich in Malawi?“

Liebe Leser!

Mit einigen von euch hatte ich in der letzten Zeit intensiveren Kontakt, mit anderen nicht ganz so viel. So haben manche von euch die Ereignisse und Entwicklungen verfolgt, die mich schlussendlich hierher, nach Malawi, geführt haben. Andere haben inzwischen zwar erfahren, dass ich hier bin, wissen aber bislang gar nicht so recht, wie es dazu kam, und was ich hier mache. Zeit, Licht ins Dunkel zu bringen – hoffentlich etwas mehr als bei der nächtlichen Autofahrt aus dem letzten Beitrag. 😉

Vor und während der Phase meiner beruflichen Veränderung, die schlussendlich dazu geführt hat, Daimler zu verlassen, habe ich intensive Überlegungen mit Kopf, Herz und Bauch angestellt, um für mich herauszufinden, wie es denn danach weitergehen sollte. Mir war klar, dass ich zunächst einmal „etwas ganz Anderes“ machen wollte. Eine Weltreise mit dem Motorrad hat(te) es mir stark angetan (vielleicht werde ich das irgendwann noch machen), oder „etwas Soziales“ schwebte mir vor. So informierte ich mich parallel in beide Richtungen, durchstöberte einerseits Blogs von Weltreisenden, verschlang Forenbeiträge über die besten Motorräder für eine Weltreise und suchte andererseits nach passenden Organisationen für das „Soziale“. Während Ersteres recht einfach war und ich sehr viele nützliche Informationen über Motorradweltreisen fand (ich wusste am Ende ziemlich genau, welches Motorrad es werden würde, welches Zubehör ich bräuchte, was mich der Spaß kosten würde, etc.), gestaltete sich die Suche nach einer passenden Organisation für einen Freiwilligendienst oder ähnliches zunächst unerwartet schwierig.

Die Hilfsorganisation der Neuapostolischen Kirche, NAK-karitativ e. V., kannte ich bereits seit einiger Zeit. Bereits vor mehr als zwei Jahren, als ich den Jahresbericht der Organisation durchblätterte, war ich begeistert von der Arbeit, den Projekten, welche durch die Organisation in verschiedenen Ländern der Erde finanziert, koordiniert, unterstützt werden. „Das wär‘ auch mal was“, dachte ich mir, ohne auch nur im Geringsten daran zu denken, dass ich tatsächlich einmal bei „so etwas“ mitarbeiten würde. Über anderthalb Jahre später nun, als ich mir ab Mitte / Ende des letzten Jahres so meine Gedanken gemacht hatte, dachte ich natürlich auch an NAK-karitativ. Auf der Website der Organisation entdeckte ich allerdings schnell das Logo zu dem vom Bund geförderten Freiwilligenprogramm weltwärts, das sich an junge Menschen bis maximal 28 Jahre richtet. „Scheidet aus!“, dachte ich mir und machte mich anderweitig auf die Suche.

Zwar fand ich bei meiner Suche unzählige Organisationen, die sich der Unterstützung benachteiligter Spezies aller Art oder der Erhaltung der Natur verschrieben haben – von „Rettet die weiße Seemöwe 1922 e. V.“ über „Streichelt die Pandababies“ bis zu „Saubere Strände für alle“ fand ich alles. Einen Über- und schließlich für mich den Durchblick zu bekommen, war umso schwieriger. Viele der Organisationen bieten Freiwilligendienste im In- und Ausland an, allerdings meist mit einer Altersbeschränkung bis 28 oder 30 Jahre. Schließlich stieß ich auf ein paar Organisationen oder besser (Wirtschafts-)Unternehmen, die freiwillige Dienste gegen Bezahlung anboten (ein Widerspruch in sich?). Gemäß den Werbeaussagen besagter Institutionen können freiwillige Helfer ohne jegliche Vorkenntnisse Projekte in den verschiedensten Bereichen unterstützen – für eine Woche oder ein halbes Jahr. Häuser bauen, Kinder unterrichten, Tiere pflegen, die Umwelt schützen – alles problemlos möglich und eben für Geld. Dies erschien mir von Anfang an dubios und ich machte mich gezielt daran, kritische Stimmen über entsprechende „Reiseveranstalter“ zu finden. Schnell wurde ich fündig – das Ganze wird in Fachkreisen unter dem Kunstwort Voluntourism (Volunteering + Tourism) abgetan – Freiwilligentourismus also, eine Mischung aus ein bisschen Urlaub am Sandstrand mit ein bisschen (vermeintlich) helfen und (vermeintlich) Gutes zu tun. Warum vermeintlich? Eines der wahrscheinlich drastischsten Negativbeispiele entnahm ich einer Dokumentation des WDR über das wachsende Phänomen des Freiwilligentourismus: In Indien werden offenbar vermehrt Waisenhäuser eröffnet, in denen sich junge Menschen aus den reichen Ländern der Welt für eine Zeit lang um die vermeintlichen Waisenkinder kümmern können. Die Recherche der Reporter ergab allerdings, dass es sich bei den Kindern häufig gar nicht wirklich um Waisen handelt, sondern dass die Kinder ihren Eltern im besten Fall abgekauft, im schlimmsten Fall weggenommen wurden. Durch diese und weitere Berichte erkannte ich, dass es wohl nicht so einfach werden würde, eine geeignete Organisation zu finden.

Obwohl ich meine Chancen wie gesagt als gering einstufte, kontaktierte ich NAK-karitativ auf den Ratschlag eines vertrauten Ratgebers hin schließlich doch, um abzuklären, ob Möglichkeiten zur Mitarbeit im Rahmen eines Freiwilligendienstes auch für Menschen minimal über 28 bestünden. Entgegen meiner Erwartung war ich umso erfreuter, als ich von einer der Projektkoordinatorinnen aus der Zentrale in Dortmund hörte, das einem Freiwilligendienst im Ausland grundsätzlich nichts entgegenstand. Die finanzielle Förderung durch den Bund würde in diesem Fall zwar entfallen – das sollte verschmerzbar sein, dachte ich mir.
Und ab da ging alles ganz schnell und Schlag auf Schlag. Nachdem zunächst die Teilnahme an einem der Projekte in Gambia oder Kenia im Gespräch war, kristallisierte sich Malawi heraus. Die Abklärung mit der hiesigen Partnerorganisation ergab, dass man sich über Unterstützung freuen würde. Weitere Gespräche mit den Kollegen von NAK-karitativ folgten, ein Treffen mit dem Geschäftsführer Anfang Dezember sowie ein zweitägiger Besuch Mitte Januar in Dortmund.
Mein positiver Eindruck, den ich von der Organisation bereits vorab bei der Lektüre der Geschäftsberichte der vergangenen Jahre bekommen hatte, wurde bestärkt: „Das hat alles Hand und Fuß!“, es wird versucht, in den unterstützten Ländern wirklich nachhaltig zu helfen. „Nachhaltig“, dem Credo „Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe“ folgend. Dabei bekam ich den Eindruck, dass die Organisation bei allen Aktivitäten, die in den entsprechenden Ländern ausgeübt werden, sich stets selbst hinterfragt – „Macht das wirklich nachhaltig und langfristig Sinn für die Menschen? Hilft es ihnen wirklich?“. Außerdem wird ganz offensichtlich Wert darauf gelegt, den größtenteils aus Deutschland stammenden Spendern Rechenschaft darüber abzulegen, inwieweit die anvertrauten Mittel auch tatsächlich sinnvoll, im Sinn von „den Menschen wirklich helfend“, verwendet werden. Nicht zuletzt das seit 2005 verliehene Gütesiegel des Deutschen Zentralinstituts für soziale Fragen (DZI) bescheinigt NAK-karitativ den transparenten und verantwortungsvollen Umgang mit Spendenmitteln.
Schließlich habe ich den Vertrag zur Teilnahme an einem neunmonatigen Freiwilligendienst über NAK-karitativ bei der lokalen Partnerorganisation in Malawi, NACRO, unterschrieben. Warum neun Monate? Einerseits wollte ich zunächst einmal in dieses für mich doch völlig neue Feld hineinschnuppern. Außerdem wollte ich an Weihnachten wieder zu Hause sein. Passenderweise empfand auch die Organisation neun Monate als guten Kompromiss zwischen „für den Anfang nicht zu lang“ und „lang genug, um in die neue Umgebung und die Themen hineinzukommen“. Als Starttermin legten wir den ersten März fest.
Nachdem ich bei Daimler am 31. Dezember ausgeschieden war, hatte ich also ausreichend Zeit, einerseits die neu gewonnene Freiheit zu genießen, andererseits die Reise und den Aufenthalt hier in Malawi vorzubereiten. Schließlich ließ ich mich von mir selbst dazu hinreißen, nach „Breaking Bad“ endlich wieder einmal eine (elendslange) Serie zu beginnen. So nahm mich neben der Planung und Vorbereitung der Abreise auch „Game of Thrones“ ganz ordentlich in Beschlag. 🙂

Impfungen bekommen, Versicherungen abschließen, Handyvertrag auf Eis legen, Auto abgeben, Wohnung vermieten, Utensilien anschaffen, Infos einholen, Abschied feiern – die ToDo-Liste war lang, die Zeit wurde irgendwann knapp – am Ende hat alles noch geklappt und nun bin ich also seit fast drei Wochen hier. Aktuell sitze ich in T-Shirt und kurzer Hose im Schatten der Mauer, die das Grundstück umgibt, auf dem mein kleiner Bungalow steht. Um mich herum habe ich auf Anraten meines Vermieters Ben einen Kreis aus „blue death“ gezogen – einem Giftpulver zur hochwirksamen Abtötung von Ameisen, von denen es hier nur so wimmelt. „They will come as soon as you sit here“, meinte Ben und sollte Recht behalten. Zusammen mit Doom, dem Super-Multi-Instant-Insekten-Killer-Spray, ein leider notwendiges aber immerhin effektives Mittel. Inzwischen habe ich mich schon ziemlich gut eingelebt und fühle mich insgesamt sehr wohl. Auch auf der Arbeit komme ich nach und nach in die Themen rein und konnte auch schon erste Aufgäbchen erledigen. Über die bisherigen Erfahrungen in der Projektarbeit einer afrikanischen Hilfsorganisation werde ich euch in den nächsten Beiträgen berichten.
